In our last blog posts we have discussed about work safety, prevention and necessary documents your company needs to properly handle hazardous material and substances. After presenting the Safety data sheet and the Operating instructions, we will today discuss about another important document for work safety: the Hazardous Substances Register.

What is a Hazardous Substances Register?

The Hazardous Substances Register, also called Hazardous Material Register, is a document listing every hazardous material used in a company. Required by the Work Health and Safety Regulation, this document merges and lists all the most important information present in the Safety Data Sheet provided by your supplier.

Information required for a Hazardous Substances Register

  • Identification of the material or the product
  • Hazardous substances of content
  • Hazard classification
  • Quantity used
  • Area of operations
  • Storage area (Safety Data Sheet)

Legal specifications and background

The data in the column 2 to 8 are legally required. In Germany, according to the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances, the data regarding the classification (Column 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b) or the hazardous properties of the product must be specified. The classification according to the EU Ordinance (Column 5a, 5b) may not apply, if exclusively hazardous materials with a GHS classification are used.

The Global Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) has been set as a standard in the EU area with the CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) Regulation (CE) 1272/2008.

Further information about the Hazard identification and classification are here available on the website of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work.

The Hazardous Substances Register can also provide the following information

  • Safety instructions: P-Statement/ Precautionary Statement according to the GHS
(if necessary, add the S-Statement according to the EU policy)
  • Identification: pictogram according to the GHS
(if necessary, add the danger symbols according to the EU policy)
  • Acid or base
  • Recommended protective equipment
  • Intended use
  • Period of use
  • Number of employees especially exposed
  • Absorption means
  • Consumption per year
  • Supplier

If you want to add those information, feel free to adapt and complete your document.
